«Poverty is a form of violence» states Caritas Internationalis on the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty to be held on 17 October. Held from 1987 and recognised by the UN ever since 1992, this year the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty will be dedicated to children. In fact, the 30th anniversary of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child will be celebrated on 20 November 2019.
Child poverty constitutes a vicious circle that leads to chronic poverty in adulthood, accompanied by various health problems: facing the recognition of the fact that child poverty is the denial of the most fundamental rights of children, governments and institutions should feel responsible for the fight to eradicate child poverty. Little girls, in particular, are the poorest among the poor.
According to the International Committee of 17 October, the eradication of child poverty involves all the actors in the creation of systems of social protection to safeguard the rights of the children. Not only communities and families must contribute to this change, but also children themselves as main actors, through new forms of participation that must be recognized as a part of the process.
