North European countries prove to be those where the development of children is ensured in full respect of their rights. Great concern for countries shaken by conflict and poverty.
The report "KidsRights Index 2020: Children's rights in the world under pressure due to the coronavirus crisis", compiled by the International Organization for the Rights of the Child "KidsRights", was recently published.
The "KidsRights Index" is based on five key assessment criteria to classify the various countries of the world: the right to life, the right to health, the right to education, the right to protection and the right to a favourable climate for children.
In this ranking, the 3 countries that best respect children's rights turned out to be Iceland (1st), Switzerland (2nd) and Finland (3rd). They achieved good results in five areas, including "education", "protection" and "child-friendly environment". Performance in the latter category is based on the Final Comments adopted by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child.
Chad, Afghanistan and Sierra Leone are at the bottom of the 2020 index. Great concern is also expressed about the impact that continued instability in countries such as Syria and Venezuela may have on children's well-being.
