From the fight against social exclusion to intergenerational solidarity: the UN's objectives to protect the family.
A few months ago, the resolution "The 20th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family and Beyond" was unanimously approved by the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly.
The Third Committee, which deals with social, cultural and humanitarian issues, encouraged the various States to strengthen their policies for the protection of the family in order to achieve the objectives of the International Year of the Family and the process of proposing new strategies in this regard, especially in the areas most concerned with the fight against poverty.
The Committee also called on Member States to allocate investments for family welfare oriented programmes in order to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. In addition to the fight against poverty, for example, good instruments in this sense are policies to combat exclusion and social injustice, encourage family-friendly working arrangements, measures to overcome gender inequality, social integration and intergenerational solidarity.
Finally, the Third Committee's concern has been to promote the provision by States of comprehensive, inclusive and quality social protection systems, an education system that takes into account the whole of a person's life, a welfare system that guarantees health and well-being for all at all ages, full and productive employment, decent work, social insurance, means of subsistence and social cohesion.
In the Committee's view, these systems must be the result of measures that have as their starting point the facilitation of parental life, such as the granting of child support allowances to parents and old-age pension benefits, and the guarantee of respect for the rights, abilities and responsibilities of all family members.
