To fight global poverty by helping the countries devastated by war: the strategy of the World Bank

It has been presented the new strategic document of the World Bank that proposes solutions to improve the socio-economic conditions of countries in conditions of armed conflict, with the intention of fighting poverty at a global level.

According to the World Bank, to fight poverty at a global level, first it is necessary to act in a specific way in countries marked by instability, conflicts and violence. For this reason, a specific strategy has been elaborated that foresees a series of financing and manoeuvres to face these challenges, both in countries with a low GDP and in those with an average GDP.

According to a report of the World Bank itself, continuing the current trend, in 2030 two thirds of the persons in conditions of extreme poverty will live in fragile countries devastated by armed conflicts. The increase of war tensions is directly related to the exacerbation of the socio-economic conditions of the countries in conflict and it is jeopardising decades of results in the fight against global poverty.

The strategy of the WB is based on a support work that precedes, accompanies and monitors the situations of crisis to oppose to the terrible economic consequences. One of the most emphasized issues is the prevention of such circumstances by identifying the profound causes of the conflict before the tensions explode irremediably. If the conflict is inevitable, in the phase of activity the focus must be the construction of institutional connections and the maintenance of primary care systems such as healthcare and education.

Regarding the long-term support, there is the need to help the countries to carry out the transition from a condition of precariousness to a safer economic stability. This objective can be achieved with solutions that must be foreseen both at a public and at a private level, such as the progressive investments for small and medium companies, which are essential in job’s creation.

The strategy of the World Bank seems to confirm a new way of thinking about poverty as a global problem that, however, needs detailed solutions. The report foresees solutions to be put into practice during 5 years, starting from now. What will happen within 2025? Read the full document here.
